Lata MangeshkarLata Mangeshkar is an Indian music director and playback singer. She is one of India’s most well-known and respected playback singers. She has sung songs in over thirty-six Indian and foreign languages, but primarily in Marathi, Urdu, Hindi, and Bengali, and has recorded songs in over a thousand Hindi films.

The Government of India awarded her the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2001 for her contributions to the country, making her only the second vocalist to do so after M. S. Subbulakshmi. In 2007, France bestowed upon her the highest civilian honour, the Officer of the Legion of Honour.

She has received numerous awards, including three National Film Awards, 15 Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, two Filmfare Special Awards, and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the first Indian to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1974.

She is the eldest of four siblings: Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
